Drug interactions:
Clarithromycin (biaxin) is in a group of drugs called macrolide antibiotics. Clarithromycin (biaxin) is used to treat bacterial infections in many different parts of the body. It works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. Clarithromycin is available only with your doctor's prescription, in the following dosage forms:
Oral
Oral suspension (U.S. and Canada)
Tablets (U.S. and Canada)
Extended-release tablets (U.S.)
Do not use clarithromycin if you are also using any of the drugs listed below. They can interact with clarithromycin and cause life-threatening heart rhythm disorders:
- astemizole (Hismanal);
- cisapride (Propulsid);
- ergot medicine such as ergotamine (Ergomar, Ergostat, Cafergot, Ercaf, Wigraine), or dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45, Migranal Nasal Spray);
- pimozide (Orap); or
- terfenadine (Seldane).
Take Biaxin Suspension by mouth with or without food.
